Dear Friends and Booklovers,

What an exciting year for the Odyssey!  We hosted many fabulous authors including National Book Award finalist Min Jin Lee, Moshin Hamid, New England Independent Booksellers Association Fiction winner Jessica Shattuck, Aja Monet, Alexander Fuller, Madeleine Blais, Kamila Shamsie,  Lisa Yee, Mira Bartok, Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, Finn Murphy, and Andrea Lawlor –just to name a few. We continued our partnership with Mount Holyoke College in co-sponsoring events on campus. Roxanne Gay, Beverley Tatum, Haroon Moghul, and Senator Elizabeth Warren drew large crowds from Mount Holyoke and the greater area.

We developed two new partnerships this year with area arts venues. In May we co-hosted Dennis Lehane in Holyoke at the amazing Gateway City Arts during their grand opening. Besides Dennis’ exciting presentation, we had the thrilling experience of a fire alarm in the middle of the event. We adjourned to the sidewalk with our beverages where Dennis signed books until the false alarm was shut off by Holyoke firefighters. Everyone in attendance will remember that reading. In November we headed north to Turners Falls and co-sponsored an event with John Hodgman at the incredible Shea Theater. John entertained the audience for an hour and a half and then signed books for adoring fans until 11:30 pm!

Also, this summer the Odyssey Bookshop became the home of the Mount Holyoke College Campus Store. We painted the walls Mount Holyoke blue, and we have a large selection of Mount Holyoke College tee-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, mugs, travel tumblers, wine glasses, tote bags, baseball caps, and now baby clothes! We’re continuing to stock new items in preparation for winter and the new semester, including fleece jackets, scarves, and cozy long sleeves, and in a return to our origins we’re even stocking a small pharmacy shelf for students (coming full circle from when the drugstore stocked books!)

However, none of this could have happened without the hardworking Odyssey staff, none of whom work here for the high salaries. Their dedication to superb customer service and a passion for the written word are what makes the Odyssey a very special place. And of course without our customers, authors, and friends in publishing the Odyssey would not exist. I look forward to continuing this literary odyssey with all of you as we enter our 55th year in 2018.  I am most grateful for the support of each and every one of you.

I wish everyone a peaceful holiday season, and a New Year in which democracy, social justice, equality, and a sustainable future will be realized.
