The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black pays homage to the seminal vampire books of the 20th century while simultaneously sending up those lesser, “bandwagon” vampire series and standing readers’ expectations on their heads. Tana is a richly developed heroine we can all root for, whose good intentions but complicated motivations provide a series of surprises and twists to keep readers guessing. The more deeply she ventures into the heart of Coldtown, the more we shiver in anticipation of the dénouement: Will it end in revenge, romance, reunion, or possibly revolution? ~Emily— From Staff Picks for the Holidays!
Forget Twilight, finally a vampire book you want to read! The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is Holly Black's hat tip to greats such as Anne Rice and Bram Stoker. It explores a world where humans and vampires collide. Following the “outing” of vampires when a rogue vampire travels the world “infecting” people, the United States government deals with it they only way they know how. Take all known vampires, infected people, and many innocents and barricade them in impenetrable prisons called Coldtowns. Coldtowns are open to anyone but once you enter you may never leave. When Tana wakes up in a bathtub at a house party, she discovers a bloody massacre of which the only survivors are her (infected) annoying ex boyfriend and a mysterious boy with a dangerous secret. Not knowing what to do Tana can only think of one option; go to Coldtown. Heart thumping action and unique characters with a sprinkling of humor and a whole lot of blood, Holly Black has done it again with The Coldest Girl in Coldtown.— From Hannah's Picks
Tana lives in a world where walled cities called Coldtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in a decadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass through Coldtown's gates, you can never leave.
One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black.

"Black's compelling prose, descriptive yet direct, conjures a modern gothic world populated by cruel immortals, desperate humans offering themselves as food, and a few hardscrabble survivors. Tana is a winning heroine, by turns staking killer vampires and giving herself over to Gavriel's deep, smoldering kisses."—The Horn Book
