Gary Schmidt, Orbiting Jupiter

EVENT: Gary Schmidt, Orbiting Jupiter
WHEN: Friday, October 16, 6:00 pm
WHERE: South Hadley Public Library, 2 Canal St, South Hadley

Gary D. Schmidt, master creator of heavy-hitting novels for young readers, comes to the South Hadley Public Library on October 16th at 6:00 PM to present his new book, Orbiting Jupiter. This novel presents the shattering story of Joseph, a father at thirteen, who has never seen his daughter, Jupiter. After spending time in a juvenile facility, he’s placed with a foster family on a farm in rural Maine. Here Joseph, damaged and withdrawn, meets twelve-year-old Jack, who narrates the account of the troubled, passionate teen who wants to find his baby at any cost. In this riveting novel, two boys discover the true meaning of family and love, and the sacrifices they both require. This event is sponsored by the South Hadley Public Library and the Odyssey Bookshop, who will be selling copies of Orbiting Jupiter at the presentation.

Gary D. Schmidt is the author of Okay for Now, a National Book Award finalist; Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy, a Printz Honor and Newbery Honor book; and The Wednesday Wars, also a Newbery Honor book; and many other acclaimed books for young readers. He is a professor of English at Calvin College and lives with his family on a 150-year-old farm in Alto, Michigan.
