EVENT: Margot Livesey, author of Mercury: A Novel
WHEN: Thursday, October 13, 7:00 pm
WHERE: Odyssey Bookshop

Mercury, the new novel from New York Times bestselling author Margot Livesey, offers a penetrating look at a marriage under siege from obsession, lies, violence—and blindness to the truth. The first novel set entirely in the United States from the L.L. Winship/PEN New England Award winner, this psychologically deft portrait of contemporary life finds this “searingly intelligent writer at the height of her powers” (Jennifer Egan).

Born in Scotland, and raised there and in the States, Donald Stevenson is a buttoned-up ophthalmologist with a Boston surgery practice he loves. When his cherished father develops Parkinson’s, he gives up surgery and scales down his professional commitments in order to take care of him . After Edward’s death, Donald finds himself emotionally adrift, staying the course as best he can by keeping the quotidian details of work and childcare in order. Although fascinated with the physiognomy of vision and the multifaceted metaphor of sight, Donald is surprisingly blind to the changes taking place in his own household.

Donald’s wife, Viv, is a vibrant, accomplished woman who gives up a career in mutual funds to run a nearby riding stable with her friend Claudia. Her decision is motivated not only by her love of horses – as a young woman she rode and competed ardently - but by her realization that she will never fulfill her ambition of scaling the heights of the financial industry. When a magnificent thoroughbred, Mercury, is boarded at Windy Hill, Viv becomes enraptured. She sees Mercury as the horse that can help her fulfill her long suppressed dream of becoming a championship rider – a dream that quickly turns to obsession.

Mercury is as luminous, unforgettable, and perfectly rendered as only Margot Livesey can accomplish. I only wished it were twice as long. --Dennis Lehane, author of World Gone By
