In Memory of Karma

On February 10, 2015, the Odyssey Bookshop in South Hadley, MA suffered a great loss. Our beloved bookstore dog, Karma Downing, passed away after a brief illness. As a bookstore dog, Karma was a cherished member not only of her family at home, or of our bookstore family, but of an entire community.

From Karma’s owner Michael Downing:

“I would like to thank the Odyssey’s customers, staff and management for embracing Karma so warmly over the past two years. Karma was a shy but affectionate girl and had been my constant companion since 2005. She loved having an active social life here at the Odyssey during her final years, and got to know many of you. Seeing her regular friends would be the highlight of her day. Whether a meaty treat was handed her way or just a willing hand or pant leg set out as an offering to lick, she was always thrilled to have the attention. Her happy face and expressive eyebrows will be missed both here and at home but the memories will always make me and our bookshop family smile.”

The Odyssey remembers her this week and forever. She was always ready for a pet, a walk, a treat, ready to smile and spread the love only the sweetest of dogs can give. She brought much cheer and goodwill to her job, greeting customers and guarding her dog-father, Michael’s desk. She always loved a belly rub. Karma could warm the most curmudgeonly of hearts with her big brown eyes, her adorable “turkey legs” and her indiscriminate love of licking hands and faces. Her easy, relaxed, and calm manner soothed any workday stress with a simple pet or two. It was always a special joy to see Karma’s curious face—with her expressive copper colored eyebrows—pop up from under a desk or from behind a register to greet a friend or to make a new one.

She was a treasure to the last. It was a privilege to know her. We still feel her good vibrations. We can’t say it better than Kate Bush: “She’s here in our heads, like the sun coming out. And we know that something good is gonna happen.”
