The simple choices we make often have unexpected dire consequences. Megha Majumdar’s stunning debut novel details how these choices and the lack of honesty and morality destroy a young Muslim girl from the slums. Jivan is a sales clerk at Pantalons, hoping her new job will lead her out of poverty. Her social media post decrying police inaction during a terrorist attack lands her in prison. Two acquaintances could help her with an alibi and support her character as a good student. Lovely is an intersex hijara and is hoping for a big break to reach stardom in Bollywood. Jivan is her English tutor. PT Sir is Jivan’s PE teacher who is bored with life and teaching. An opportunist, he is recruited by a right-wing party and his lies produce horrendous consequences. The age old themes of innocence, betrayal, lies, abuse of power and opportunism are brilliantly portrayed in a timeless story set in modern India.

“Majumdar’s suspenseful narrative holds a mirror up to society at large, reflecting the lies people tell themselves to rationalize sacrificing morality for personal gain. Unintended consequences from an impulsive social media post explode against a backdrop of deep economic insecurities and centuries-old prejudices. A searing debut, this novel is timely and timeless. It packs a punch way above its weight. Brilliant.”
