In this free presentation open to the public, Robert Fieseler will delve into the shocking tragedy as well as the research and production process behind his book Tinderbox. An essential work of American civil rights history, Fieseler's Tinderbox mesmerizingly reconstructs the 1973 arson fire that devastated New Orleans’ subterranean gay community in what was the largest mass murder of gays until 2016. Buried for decades, the Up Stairs Lounge fire has only recently emerged as a catalyzing event of the gay liberation movement.

A Q & A session will follow his presentation.

Robert W. Fieseler is a journalist and historian whose work has appeared widely and been recognized in roundups of best nonfiction by The Atlantic, the Los Angeles Times and other places. His first book Tinderbox – a work of queer history published by W.W. Norton/Liveright – received a starred review from Kirkus and was named an Amazon Book of the Month. Fieseler graduated co-valedictorian from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and is a recipient of the Pulitzer Traveling Fellowship and the Lynton Fellowship in Book Writing. He currently resides with his husband in New Orleans.
