In November you may have visited our store on small business Saturday for Indies First Day, an idea spearheaded by young adult author Sherman Alexie that called for authors to support their local independent bookstores in a unique way. Over 1,000 authors worked as a 'bookseller for a day' hand selling their favorite books to fans and customers as well as using their websites and social media outlets to encourage consumers to shop indie. Authors and booksellers worked side by side all over the country on small business Saturday. Including 10 authors who worked here in the Odyssey!
Now in the spirit of supporting your indie bookstore, Library of Congress' National Ambassador for Young People's Literature, Kate Dicamillo has declared May 17th to be Indies First Storytime Day. In honor of the 95th anniversary of Children's Book Week, authors will be on hand to read aloud their favorite picture books.
Burleigh Muten, author of Miss Emily will be reading The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf.
David Hyde Costello, author of I Can Help will be reading Frog and Toad All Year by Arnold Lobel.
"The point is to read aloud, to celebrate stories and to celebrate the indies who work so hard to put our stories in the hand of readers" said Dicamillio
