The Odyssey, along with the Mount Holyoke College Asian Studies program, is pleased to welcome Indira Peterson, who will read from Arjuna and the Hunter (Harvard University Press 2016, Murty Classical LIbrary of India) and will discuss the challenges of translating an ancient Sanskrit poem for 21st century readers. Peterson will also be speaking about the story and impact of Harvard University Press's new Indian classics in translation series, the Murty Classical Library of India. Arjuna and the Hunter is the first English translation of the 6th century Sanskrit epic Kiratarjuniya, a classic of Indian literature. Treating an episode in the war epic Mahabharata, in which the great god Shiva tests the hero Arjuna, Bharavi’s poem is celebrated for its literary excellence. There will also be a reception with Indian snacks!

Indira Viswanathan Peterson is Professor of Asian Studies, Emerita, Mount Holyoke College. Her major publications include Poems to Siva: The Hymns of the Tamil Saints and Design and Rhetoric in a Sanskrit Court Epic: The Kiratarjuniya of Bharavi. Peterson was editor for Indian literature for the Norton Anthology of World Literature.
