Event: Jeff Halper, War Against the People
When: Tuesday, March 8, 7:00 pm
Where: The Odyssey Bookshop
The Odyssey welcomes Israeli anthropologist, Jeff Halper to discuss his new book, War Against the People. In this powerful indictment of the Israeli state’s war in the Palestinian Occupied Territories. Halper draws on firsthand research to show the pernicious effects of the subliminal form of unending warfare conducted by Israel, an approach that relies on sustaining fear among the populace, fear that is stoked by suggestions that the enemy is inside the city limits, leaving no place truly safe and justifying the intensification of military action and militarization in everyday life. War Against the People is a bold attempt to shine the light on the daily injustices visited on a civilian population and thus hasten their end.
Jeff Halper is a Co-Founder of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) and the Coordinator of the War Against the People project of The People Yes! Network (TPYN). Jeff received his Ph.D. in Cultural and Applied Anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee before moving to Israel. For more than a decade he worked as a community worker for the Jerusalem municipality in the working class Mizrahi (Middle Eastern) Jewish neighborhoods of Jerusalem. Among Jeff’s many academic and political writings are Between Redemption and Revival: The Jewish Yishuv in Jerusalem in the Nineteenth Century, Obstacles to Peace, a resource manual of articles and maps on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, and An Israeli in Palestine.
