April is poetry month! So join us at The Odyssey Bookshop to welcome Kevin McCaffrey & Jeffrey Harrison for the release of their new poetry books. McCaffrey’s Laughing Cult is inspired by the spirit and approach of Bertolt Brecht’s Manual of Piety, the poems often employ the structures of ballads, folksongs, and other traditional forms to create miniature sketches marked by romantic ambiguity, occultism, science fiction, and quirky angst. These are two-dimensional poems for a one-dimensional age.
In Into Daylight, Jeffrey Harrison reflects on the daily familiarities and fragilities experienced in a long marriage and as a parent of teenagers, refracted through the shock of a brother’s suicide. Limpid and direct on the surface but eloquent in resonance, Harrison asks what comes after: How to live, how to continue writing, and how to find one's proper relationship with the world and restore some semblance of delight, while giving voice to sadness and pain.
Kevin McCaffrey is the author of the horror novel Nightmare Therapy. He works at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts.
Jeffrey Harrison’s poems have appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, The Yale Review, among others. He is currently on the faculty of the Stonecoast MFA Program at the University of Southern Maine. He lives in Dover, Massachusetts.
