A Night of Poetry

Join us on Tuesday, October 8 at 7:00pm in Gamble Auditorium at Mount Holyoke College to celebrate the release of author Shira Erlichman's debut poetry collection, Odes to Lithium. She will be joined by Franny Choi, celebrated writer of poems, essays, and plays, and Ocean Vuong, the New York Times bestselling author of On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous and the critically acclaimed poetry collection, Night Sky with Exit Wounds.

This event is co-sponsored by the Mount Holyoke College English Department. It is free to attend, but RSVPs are encouraged.

About the Book

In her remarkable debut Odes to Lithium, Shira Erlichman pens a love letter to Lithium, her medication for Bipolar Disorder. With inventiveness, compassion, and humor, she thrusts us into a world of unconventional praise. From an unexpected encounter with her grandmother’s ghost, to a bubble bath with Bjӧrk, to her plumber’s confession that he, too, has Bipolar, Erlichman buoyantly topples stigma against the mentally ill. These are necessary odes to self-acceptance, resilience, and the jagged path toward healing. With startling language, and accompanied by her bold drawings and collages, she gives us a sparkling, original view into what makes us human.

About the Authors

Shira Erlichman is a poet, musician, and visual artist. She was born in Israel and immigrated to the US when she was six. Her poems explore recovery –– of language, of home, of mind –– and value the "scattered wholeness" of healing. She earned her BA at Hampshire College and has been awarded the James Merrill Fellowship by the Vermont Studio Center, the Visions of Wellbeing Focus Fellowship at AIR Serenbe, as well as a residency by the Millay Colony. Her debut poetry collection, Odes to Lithium, is out now via Alice James Books. She is also the author and illustrator of the picture book Be/Hold. She lives in Brooklyn where she teaches writing and creates.

Franny Choi is a writer of poems, essays, and plays. She is the author of two poetry collections, Soft Science (Alice James Books) and Floating, Brilliant, Gone (Write Bloody Publishing), as well as a chapbook, Death by Sex Machine (Sibling Rivalry Press). She is a Kundiman Fellow, a 2019 Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellow, and a graduate of the University of Michigan's Helen Zell Writers Program. She edits for HyphenMagazine and co-hosts the podcast VS alongside fellow Dark Noise Collective member Danez Smith. She is a current Gaius Charles Bolin Fellow in English at Williams College.

Ocean Vuong is the author of the debut novel, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, out from Penguin Press (2019) and forthcoming in 19 languages worldwide. He is also the author of the critically acclaimed poetry collection, Night Sky with Exit Wounds, a New York Times Top 10 Book of 2016, winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize, the Whiting Award, the Thom Gunn Award, and the Forward Prize for Best First Collection. A Ruth Lilly fellow from the Poetry Foundation, his honors include fellowships from the Lannan Foundation, the Civitella Ranieri Foundation, The Elizabeth George Foundation, The Academy of American Poets, and the Pushcart Prize.
